CardioVascular BioTherapeutics, Inc. (OTCBB:CVBT) announced that it will present a session on protein angiogenesis for the treatment of cardiovascular disease at the Euro-Biotech Forum, taking place in Paris from June 26-28, 2007. The presentation, titled “New Progress in Protein Angiogenesis Therapy for Cardiovascular Disease Patients,” will be given by Dr. Jack Jacobs, vice president and chief operating officer of CVBT.
This presentation will provide a look at the developing field of protein therapy for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, which is the number one killer of adults worldwide. The medical industry is in serious need of new treatment options for the many diseases encompassed by cardiovascular disease, including peripheral artery disease, coronary heart disease, stroke and wound healing disorders associated with diabetes. CVBT is developing a protein-based technology by which a member of the human Fibroblast Growth Factor family, known as Fibroblast Growth Factor-1 (FGF-1), stimulates angiogenesis, or new blood vessel growth. Research and previous clinical trials have shown the protein can stimulate new blood vessel growth approximately two months after injection into several types of tissues that suffer from poor blood perfusion due to blockage of arteries.

FGF-1 is a natural product found in the human body. The use of its angiogenic potency represents a new approach to treating a disease that is devastating both to patients and the healthcare industry given the economic burden of treating the disease.

“Cardiovascular disease is the underlying cause of more than one third of the deaths in the United States. Nearly 2,400 Americans die of cardiovascular disease each day, an average of one death every 36 seconds, and it is clear that there is an opportunity and a dire need to improve the treatment of this disease,” said Dr. Jacobs. “The American Heart Association estimates that the cost of cardiovascular diseases and stroke in the United States alone for 2007 will be $431.8 billion. This figure includes hospital costs, medical professional services and drug costs. Through scientific innovation, CVBT has developed and is committed to bringing to market a cost-effective drug candidate that will reduce the suffering and improve the quality of life of individuals affected by this disease.”

The 14th Annual Euro-Biotech Forum is a partnering meeting for American and European life science companies offering company presentations, meetings and networking functions designed to bring together the brightest ideas in the biotech industry. The event is a forum for thought leaders to engage in debates, present case studies and share best practices for the development of cutting-edge biotechnology products.
